but i speak the words of truth and soberress and i earnestly en treat my people everywhere not to be per suaded by the wild inventions of party iae i i tion addressed to them on issues entirely i outside of their material interests but to listen to the words of one who has no per sonal advantage to subserve and who in making these remarks is actuated simply by a desire to see his people pursue a course i consistent with their past situation and . their future responsibilities and duties j for my colored brethren we have most serious responsibilities and duties in the future spring from a state of slavery to one which makes us legislators and gives us a voice as potential as that of our late masters in the government ofthe country ' not the southern country only but tins united states at large ; for reconstruc ion is about to ensue on our admission to po litical rights and our vote in georgia tor federal offices is equal to the vote of the white man north and south for the 1 ed er.tl offices the first question that arises under this state of affairs is are we prepared by education or otherwise to select the best . men for office ." and if not whom are we to look for advice in this question which so deeply involves the fate of our people to the first proposition 1 think that the educated and thinking men of my people must answer that with few exceptions mv people are not capable of the neces sary discrimination ;" and this is not ne cessarily the result of any inferiority of race as may be suggested but is the re sult of what wsiuld be in any long contin ued slavery aud a general want of educa . tion i now then niy people under these cir cumstances to whom shall we look for j advice . hall it be to the people of the northern states or to the people of the south — to the stranger who preaches be ;
