white and colored preachers from the north under tlie pretence of holding conventions and other religious meetings come among them in swarms and fleece them out of all their hard earnings instead of taking tip collections it the north for the benefit of the former slaves whose poverty they have been accustomed to deplore and bringing the money here for distribution among them they come here to raise money for northern churches northern societies anil northern objects of charity they pray fervently preach after the must approved puritan fashion shed tears over their nnv eries but invariably wind up the exercises by taking up a collection for some distant northern object our good-natured but foolish colored people tickled by the com pliments paid them and moved by the pa thetic appeals addressed to their sympa thieb give their last dime to these white and black hypocrites and impostors they deprive themselvcb and families of the ne cessaries of life to contribute to the sup port not of northern churches anil charita ble societies hut of shrewd money-hunting clerical adventurers it is mean and dis graceful enough for northern churches und societies to build themselves up by levies upon the poor colored people of the south hut one thing could be meaner and that would be the conversion of the money thus raised to the private purposes of these wolves iu sheep's clothing — and that is ex actly whut is done in most eases it is really a shame and a scandal that the col ored people of the south should be thus imposed upon how long will they suffer themselves to he thus defrauded by these swarms of mercenary adventurers the north should contribute to the support of the north is it not the duty of the frced menv bureau to at ha 1 counsel its wards iu this matter it is us much the preacher from the north to ret hold of their money they have been tel ling the colored people of the south all along that they are the poorest and most ' persecuted people on earth and thai they have for years wept over their miseries — j now however is the colored people of the 1 south hy means of the employment ac corded them hy the southern whites are beginning to make a little money these white and colored preachers from the north under tlie pretence of holding conventions and other religious meetings come among them in swarms and fleece them out of all their hard earnings instead of taking tip collections it the north for the benefit of the former slaves whose poverty they have been accustomed to deplore and bringing the money here for distribution among them they come here to raise money for northern churches northern societies anil northern objects of charity they pray fervently preach after the must approved puritan fashion shed tears over their nnv eries but invariably wind up the exercises by taking up a collection for some distant northern object our good-natured but foolish colored people tickled by the com pliments paid them and moved by the pa thetic appeals addressed to their sympa thieb give their last dime to these white and black hypocrites and impostors they deprive themselvcb and families of the ne cessaries of life to contribute to the sup port not of northern churches anil charita ble societies hut of shrewd money-hunting clerical adventurers it is mean and dis graceful enough for northern churches und societies to build themselves up by levies upon the poor colored people of the south hut one thing could be meaner and that would be the conversion of the money thus raised to the private purposes of these wolves iu sheep's clothing — and that is ex actly whut is done in most eases it is really a shame and a scandal that the col ored people of the south should be thus imposed upon how long will they suffer themselves to he thus defrauded by these swarms of mercenary adventurers the north should contribute to the support of the north is it not the duty of the frced menv bureau to at ha 1 counsel its wards iu this matter it is us much the
