recapture have become under the influence of | ihe saiiu pernicious doctrines accessories lo ibis murder nor do the guilty paities stop here the blood of all whether white or black who ell in this fray is on the souls of ihose who incited the riot as fully as those who engaged in il from the baltimore american the murders in pennsylva nia we learn that seven persons have been arrested — live negteos and two whiles — on the charge of being concerned in the recent murderous outrages at christiana in lancaster county pennsylvania we furth?r learn that in the course of the af fray three . negroes were killed as may be well imagined an intense excitement prevailed tboughout baltimore county and especially in that portion of it where the messrs gorsuch resided a number of respectable citizens of the county have already proceeded to lancaster with the determination to see tbe authors of the outrage brought to a strict legal aecounta th'e philadelphia bulletin of saturday afternoon lias the following late intelli gence by telegraph we learn by a telegraphic despatch to william b reed esq district attorney of philadelphia county that j l 1 hoop ton esq . district attorney of lancaster county yesterday proceeded to the scene of the murder and returned to lancaster city this morning at two o'clock having in custody eleven prisoners charged with participating in the outrage ' the prisoners are composed of nine blacks and two whius tbe , names of the latter are elijah castnor and lewis han naway they were committed to lan caster jail i i mr this morning the u s marshal mr roberts the u s district attorney mr ashmead and a special u s commiss ioner from washington left in the cars lor christiana lor the purpnseol making « thorough investigation ofthe high handed affair and arresting all suspected parties these oliicers with the viewofpropei , ly enforcing iheir authority were accom panied by a company of l t . s marines from he philadelphia navy yard and a detail ol filly of marshal keyser's police it was the intention of marshal rob erts fo scour the neighborhood and bring to justice all the guilty ones we are informed by several gentlemen who came passengres in the one o'clock train from the west this afternoon that the greatest excitement prevailed through out lancaster county the negroes were fleeing in every direction the state and local authorities who have taken the lead in the matter have acted in the promptest manner the united stales authorities have also exhibited the most praiseworthy prompt ness in maintaining the law and ferret , ing out those who have so boldly resisted its execution the officers of the marshal's police who went up were under an opinion of mr reed deputized to act as u s depu ty marshals we understand that judges grier and kane have decided ihe offence of the riot ers to be treason against ihe united states suspicion rests upon some fifteen or twenty individuals additional — we learn through mr merry man who came down with the york train last night the young mr gor j such was still alive and some hopes were entertained of his recovery though his j situation was still most critical his de i position had been taken in relation to the i circumstances connected with the mur i der of his lather mr roberts the u s j marshal from philadelphia the u.s dis j trict attorney mr ashmead and a u s commissioner from washington arrived at the scene ofthe outrage on saturday ' accompanied by a detachment of eighty u s marines and fifty of the philadel phia police and the most active means were at once adopted lor the purpose of securing all supposed to have been con ! cerned in ihe outrage a large nnmber ' of persons from the surrounding country i and from baltimore county were at the ' place and were earnestly seconding the j authorities in their endeavors to arrest the j guilty parties up to yesterday morning the number j of arrests made was thirty only two of j the parties ihose named above being ; whites bail to a large amonut had been ! offered for them but refused among the negroes under arrest is the woman who , blew the horn as the signal for the gath ering ofthe blacks pinckney the slave j who shot mr gorsuch has so far not been arrested the statement that the body of j mr gorsuch was robbed after the murder i proves to be correct and adds another j revolting feature to the affair he had over 400 in his possession before ihe af fray but afterwards the only money found on his person was a 1 note and a blank check from the newbnryport mass herald the execution of lopez we have now full accounts of the bloody scene which has been enacted in cuba and [ which lias been long expected by those who > have watched most closely ihe progress of e j vents in lhat quarter there is it is evident j no seiious disaffection in cuba beyond ibe j families f nmic uf ilii raiiliy creoles in j which the young men ambitious and educated chafe al being under ihe despotic rule of span ish military officers the great mass of the whiles particularly the poorer classes upon whom any great reliance could be had for the revolutionary movements are clearly in the spanish interest and besides entertain from some cause animosity against ihe americans lopez was undoubtedly a brave man but he has shown himself through the whole lo be without judgment and to have deceived him self us well as others with a belief of his per sonal popularity which has never had any ex istance except in his own imagination the escape which lopez and his parly had at car denas was the narrowest ever known and could not be expected lo occur again in a thousand years it ought to have taught them caution in addition to ihe accounts which we give below brought by the empire city we have the following letter from one of our own cili zens a well known merchant who was pres ent at the execution of lopez : '• havana september 1st — 10 o'clock — this morning general lopez was executed as a criminal the scene was imposing although awful all ihe military in the city were form ed in a large hollow square ; in the middle wa9 the machine of death on a plalform raised len feel rom the ground on posls with a railing round and wide steps from the ground in front on the platform was ihe garote an iron seat or chair wilh ihe back in one piece extending higher than ihe person silling on the seat on tlifs back even with the head is ihe apparatus of death consisting of iron clasps which are to fit the sides of the head and a clasp lo pass round ihe throat from behind is a long iron har attached io a screw which put in molion by the hangman giving one linn draws the side and ihroal pieces light and at the same instant sends an iron in lo ihe spinal marrow ofthe neck from behind which causes inslan taneous deaih such was ihe machine for gen lopez he behaved like a brave man through out tlie awful moments he walked surround ed by a guard from the puma fort lo the steps of garote as cool apparently as if he was at the head of an army » he was diessed in a lung while gown and a white cap ; his wrists wpie ied in r °" t and above his elbows behind wilh the cords held by soldiers he ascended the steps wilh two civilians friends r.o priest as common in such cases he faced round and seemed lo take a rood look on the soldiers and the immense i thiong of people outside of ihe squtire.and seem i ed to lake a good look on the soldiers and ihe i'liinense throng of people outside ofthe square and ihen turned round and knelt in prayer for j about one minute he ihen rose and tinned : towards the front and in a clear manly voice and in tones loud enough to be heard hy the ' thousands present for it was as still as niobi spoke as follows : •' countrymen i mosl sol emnly in this last awful moment of my life ask your pardon for any injury i have caused you it was nol my wish lo injure any one my object was your freedom and happiness here he was interrupted by the commanding ffficer in front on horse back he conelud ed by saying -• my intention was good and my hope is in god he then bowed and turned round and took his seal apparently with as much coolness as if he hud taken a chair iu a | room with friends " he placed bis head hack between he iron grasps ihe negro hangman then adjusted the iron throat clasp and tied his feet lo bolls on each side ofthe seat during this preparation lopez was in conversation wilh his friend — j | the tall negro hangman who is kepi as public 1 executioner then look his place at the iron be hind lopez kissed the cross handed lo him ! by his friend ; the negro then gave one lorn of the wrench and lopez died instantly without ibe least struggle this was precisely as the clock struck seven the military at once re j turned to the city he ikind playing a quick ', step the thousands dispersed wilh little or no noise ; some of the rabble tried lo get up a ( row bul it would not go there was a solem nity in ihe whole scene which struck into the hearts ofthe mob which hut a few days previous were in wild ecslacy of joy at a brutal execu tion of fifty human beings on whose corpses ihey could glut a savage revenge by commit ting the most inhuman of indignities " a eve witness to the above scene advice to farmers to the editors of the national intelligencer gentlemen the unequalled circulation of the intelligencer renders il peculiarly desirable for a few hints therein if you will spare the room to farmers and other gentlemen located al in convenient disiance from ail mechanical aid by which to meet the ravages of time incident lo every homestead unsightly dilapidations and casual breakages are often endured by the most exemplary proprietors solely from the difficulty and remoteness of all presenl remedy i there fore respectfully offer the only recipe for this complaint and quite different too from most other prescriptions being as pleasant in ils ap plication as it is grattifying in ils effects the marvel is that it is not more general as the few who rejoice in it as a regimen have never been known to abandon it it is this : for ev ery householder thus isolated to have a " set of tools and habituate himself to their use ; and lei no man demur at this suggestion as of diffi cult attainment ; he will nol find it so while its advantages independent of pecuniary ones are i more numerous lhan room would be expected here to enumerate amusement recreation employment for mind and body and health ro sy goddes wilh her legion of blessed attend ants following in her train are some ofthe rich fruits of ihis great nature's plan as ihe di j vine dr young calls il ; and without employ the soul is on a rack : the rack of rest ; tlie souls most adverse ; action all their joy diyden though perhaps with less suavity of maniier holds the same : " the wise for health or exercise depend : god never made his works for man to mend while ihe accelerated progress of the arts in our country for tbe last half century is a just subject of surprise and gratulation we would acknowledge our dependence more or less on these little handmaids of science ihe woiking tools as our indespensible agents in every en terprise they ate therefore resorted to wilh equal pleasure and profit by the man of genius the valetudinarian the amateur and lover of domestic comfort neatness and economy — they arc moreover of easy attainment a liule fludio or room is necessary in some pari ofthe house or out bouses ten or twelve feet squale with lack to the door a work bench near a window ; also a small solid bench lo chop and saw on and a rack attached to the wall on which the small tools are always visi ble for use our tool-makers have within a few years made such decided improvements in the beauty of iheir finish as imperceptibly ere aies a desire to be handling them ; seat ol the president are seven in num i ber the largest of which is six and a half j feet in diameter taller if placed on edge i than any man in the city of philadelphia j of circular form and great beauty ; recapture have become under the influence of | ihe saiiu pernicious doctrines accessories lo ibis murder nor do the guilty paities stop here the blood of all whether white or black who ell in this fray is on the souls of ihose who incited the riot as fully as those who engaged in il from the baltimore american the murders in pennsylva nia we learn that seven persons have been arrested — live negteos and two whiles — on the charge of being concerned in the recent murderous outrages at christiana in lancaster county pennsylvania we furth?r learn that in the course of the af fray three . negroes were killed as may be well imagined an intense excitement prevailed tboughout baltimore county and especially in that portion of it where the messrs gorsuch resided a number of respectable citizens of the county have already proceeded to lancaster with the determination to see tbe authors of the outrage brought to a strict legal aecounta th'e philadelphia bulletin of saturday afternoon lias the following late intelli gence by telegraph we learn by a telegraphic despatch to william b reed esq district attorney of philadelphia county that j l 1 hoop ton esq . district attorney of lancaster county yesterday proceeded to the scene of the murder and returned to lancaster city this morning at two o'clock having in custody eleven prisoners charged with participating in the outrage ' the prisoners are composed of nine blacks and two whius tbe , names of the latter are elijah castnor and lewis han naway they were committed to lan caster jail i i mr this morning the u s marshal mr roberts the u s district attorney mr ashmead and a special u s commiss ioner from washington left in the cars lor christiana lor the purpnseol making « thorough investigation ofthe high handed affair and arresting all suspected parties these oliicers with the viewofpropei , ly enforcing iheir authority were accom panied by a company of l t . s marines from he philadelphia navy yard and a detail ol filly of marshal keyser's police it was the intention of marshal rob erts fo scour the neighborhood and bring to justice all the guilty ones we are informed by several gentlemen who came passengres in the one o'clock train from the west this afternoon that the greatest excitement prevailed through out lancaster county the negroes were fleeing in every direction the state and local authorities who have taken the lead in the matter have acted in the promptest manner the united stales authorities have also exhibited the most praiseworthy prompt ness in maintaining the law and ferret , ing out those who have so boldly resisted its execution the officers of the marshal's police who went up were under an opinion of mr reed deputized to act as u s depu ty marshals we understand that judges grier and kane have decided ihe offence of the riot ers to be treason against ihe united states suspicion rests upon some fifteen or twenty individuals additional — we learn through mr merry man who came down with the york train last night the young mr gor j such was still alive and some hopes were entertained of his recovery though his j situation was still most critical his de i position had been taken in relation to the i circumstances connected with the mur i der of his lather mr roberts the u s j marshal from philadelphia the u.s dis j trict attorney mr ashmead and a u s commissioner from washington arrived at the scene ofthe outrage on saturday ' accompanied by a detachment of eighty u s marines and fifty of the philadel phia police and the most active means were at once adopted lor the purpose of securing all supposed to have been con ! cerned in ihe outrage a large nnmber ' of persons from the surrounding country i and from baltimore county were at the ' place and were earnestly seconding the j authorities in their endeavors to arrest the j guilty parties up to yesterday morning the number j of arrests made was thirty only two of j the parties ihose named above being ; whites bail to a large amonut had been ! offered for them but refused among the negroes under arrest is the woman who , blew the horn as the signal for the gath ering ofthe blacks pinckney the slave j who shot mr gorsuch has so far not been arrested the statement that the body of j mr gorsuch was robbed after the murder i proves to be correct and adds another j revolting feature to the affair he had over 400 in his possession before ihe af fray but afterwards the only money found on his person was a 1 note and a blank check from the newbnryport mass herald the execution of lopez we have now full accounts of the bloody scene which has been enacted in cuba and [ which lias been long expected by those who > have watched most closely ihe progress of e j vents in lhat quarter there is it is evident j no seiious disaffection in cuba beyond ibe j families f nmic uf ilii raiiliy creoles in j which the young men ambitious and educated chafe al being under ihe despotic rule of span ish military officers the great mass of the whiles particularly the poorer classes upon whom any great reliance could be had for the revolutionary movements are clearly in the spanish interest and besides entertain from some cause animosity against ihe americans lopez was undoubtedly a brave man but he has shown himself through the whole lo be without judgment and to have deceived him self us well as others with a belief of his per sonal popularity which has never had any ex istance except in his own imagination the escape which lopez and his parly had at car denas was the narrowest ever known and could not be expected lo occur again in a thousand years it ought to have taught them caution in addition to ihe accounts which we give below brought by the empire city we have the following letter from one of our own cili zens a well known merchant who was pres ent at the execution of lopez : '• havana september 1st — 10 o'clock — this morning general lopez was executed as a criminal the scene was imposing although awful all ihe military in the city were form ed in a large hollow square ; in the middle wa9 the machine of death on a plalform raised len feel rom the ground on posls with a railing round and wide steps from the ground in front on the platform was ihe garote an iron seat or chair wilh ihe back in one piece extending higher than ihe person silling on the seat on tlifs back even with the head is ihe apparatus of death consisting of iron clasps which are to fit the sides of the head and a clasp lo pass round ihe throat from behind is a long iron har attached io a screw which put in molion by the hangman giving one linn draws the side and ihroal pieces light and at the same instant sends an iron in lo ihe spinal marrow ofthe neck from behind which causes inslan taneous deaih such was ihe machine for gen lopez he behaved like a brave man through out tlie awful moments he walked surround ed by a guard from the puma fort lo the steps of garote as cool apparently as if he was at the head of an army » he was diessed in a lung while gown and a white cap ; the negro then gave one lorn of the wrench and lopez died instantly without ibe least struggle this was precisely as the clock struck seven the military at once re j turned to the city he ikind playing a quick ', step the thousands dispersed wilh little or no noise ; some of the rabble tried lo get up a ( row bul it would not go there was a solem nity in ihe whole scene which struck into the hearts ofthe mob which hut a few days previous were in wild ecslacy of joy at a brutal execu tion of fifty human beings on whose corpses ihey could glut a savage revenge by commit ting the most inhuman of indignities " a eve witness to the above scene advice to farmers to the editors of the national intelligencer gentlemen the unequalled circulation of the intelligencer renders il peculiarly desirable for a few hints therein if you will spare the room to farmers and other gentlemen located al in convenient disiance from ail mechanical aid by which to meet the ravages of time incident lo every homestead unsightly dilapidations and casual breakages are often endured by the most exemplary proprietors solely from the difficulty and remoteness of all presenl remedy i there fore respectfully offer the only recipe for this complaint and quite different too from most other prescriptions being as pleasant in ils ap plication as it is grattifying in ils effects the marvel is that it is not more general as the few who rejoice in it as a regimen have never been known to abandon it it is this : for ev ery householder thus isolated to have a " set of tools and habituate himself to their use ; and lei no man demur at this suggestion as of diffi cult attainment ; he will nol find it so while its advantages independent of pecuniary ones are i more numerous lhan room would be expected here to enumerate amusement recreation employment for mind and body and health ro sy goddes wilh her legion of blessed attend ants following in her train are some ofthe rich fruits of ihis great nature's plan as ihe di j vine dr young calls il ; and wilh such a col leagee as him my purpose will be explained and work done up iu half the time taken by my pro j sing he says : " time's use was doomed a pleasure ; waste a pain ; thin man might feel his error if unseen ; and li-eling fly ti labor for llis cure not blundering split on idleness for ease life's cares are comforts ; such by heaven design'd ; ! he that has none must make them or be wretched > cares are employments ; and without employ the soul is on a rack : the rack of rest ; tlie souls most adverse ; action all their joy diyden though perhaps with less suavity of maniier holds the same : " the wise for health or exercise depend : god never made his works for man to mend while ihe accelerated progress of the arts in our country for tbe last half century is a just subject of surprise and gratulation we would acknowledge our dependence more or less on these little handmaids of science ihe woiking tools as our indespensible agents in every en terprise they ate therefore resorted to wilh equal pleasure and profit by the man of genius the valetudinarian the amateur and lover of domestic comfort neatness and economy — they arc moreover of easy attainment a liule fludio or room is necessary in some pari ofthe house or out bouses ten or twelve feet squale with lack to the door a work bench near a window ; also a small solid bench lo chop and saw on and a rack attached to the wall on which the small tools are always visi ble for use our tool-makers have within a few years made such decided improvements in the beauty of iheir finish as imperceptibly ere aies a desire to be handling them ;
