desirous first or last of attaining a good degree of that species of knowledge which is conrmonlv called among the peo ple at large * weather-wisdom — that is of being able to prognosticate by the help of various signs and symp toms what kind of weather is ap proa hing in order to find employ ment for this disposition of mind tlie almante makers have from time im memorial introduced into their annu al publications the various kinds and changes of weather that were gener aliv considered as tppropriate to the various months and week and diys of the year and such implicit reli ance has often been placed by many persons on these prophetic annuncia tions particularly in the most approv ed alman.ics that no small number of honest and credulous individuals form erly governed themselves in their daily labours by a strict attention to the in formation of the state of tlie weather foretold in " ames's almanacs which for a long time was almost the only one in use in the new england colonies we ourselves knew one i stance in which two brothers who were about commencing the annual ta«k of getting in their hav but who dare not venture a step until they had first examined the almanac in order to ascertain win - ther was likely to be propitious to their labours res rted to that infallible d - rvctorv for information it so hap pened that the very day which they h;.d selected to begin mowing was tbat on which a court was to be held at barnstable in massachusetts a fact that was also noted down accord ing to custom in the calendar aod immediately after tne name of the place where the court was to sit was interlarded ' thunder — it being natural to expect thunder occasionally in the hot season without observing that the two words had no connexion with each other the simple souls red it 1 barnstable thunder and one of them remarking that that was the worst kind of thunder they concluded to put off their haying till the storm was over the following article however is of a more serious nature and is enti tled from the highly respectable names which are connected with it to more consideration it is copied from the christian observer for july 1824 and as it furnishes an entire new set of rules for determining questions of this sort we presume it will be amusing to our readers " dr adam clark has lately com municated tothe public some meteoro logical observations in which he re marks : " from my earliest childhood i was bred upon a little farm and|as i found that much of our success depen ded on a proper knowledge and man agement of the weather i
