and to prevent the introduction of foreign influence among the indians re siding within our limits shortly after the present secretary of war came into office he projected under the sanction of the president a line of posts in that quarter which was intended to give am ple security to that portion of our coun try and protection and extension lo our valuable fur trade carried on at the sour ces of the missouri with this view and with the forecast which is so characteris tic of him the secretary of war took measures to occupy posts at the sioux of st mary's between lake superior and lake huron ;
