mock's old field will be sold op a credit of six and nine months several valuable young negroes likely and of good character at the same time and place will be rented for one year the valuable saw and from the terri tory of arkansas appeared and took his seat mr wood presented the petition of cadwallader d colden contesting the election of peter sharpe ; and mr wright a like petition of philip reed contesting the election of jeremiah causden re lerred to the committee of elections many other petitions of a local ancl less general nature were presented and refer red to the proper committees mr campbell moved the following res olution : resolved that a committee bc appointed to report a bill providing for the apportionment of representatives among the several states accord ing to the fourth census mr c was desirous that the subject be taken up at an early period of the session in order that the principle on which the apportionment ahould be based should be fully examined and deliberately settled the legislatures of several of the states he remarked were now in session ancl it might be important that the subject come before them at an early clay to enable them to district the states pursuant to the act providing for the apportionment without incurring the delay and expense of con voking the several legislatures for that ex press object he thought the census bad been so far accomplished as to enable the committee that should bc appointed to enter immediately upon the considera tion of the subject mr cocke of tennessee moved that thc resolution lie on the table further they had received — but in the present case no favor was asked the object of thc resolution was not to solicit a donation from the general government to assist in building the canal — but merely to reserve a narrow strip of land in the direction of the contemplated canal und through which it should puss by this measure the go vernment instead of impairing its funds would increase them such an act would undoubtedly enable the government to dispose of the reservation hereafter at a price greatly enhanced ancl at the same time virtually authorize the government of illinois to go on with its
