the number 393v north-carolina gazette with the lateft advices foreign and domestic semper pro libertate et bono publico copy ofthe memorial pre/cited tbe 26th of march 1777 to «■the king of great britain by count weldreh envoy of the states general of the united provinces sire it is with the moft profound refpeft that the underwritten envoy extraordinary and plenipotentiary of their high mightineffcsj in confequence of the oid.rs whicn he ha juft received has the honour of reprefeuting to your majefty that the memorial prefented by his ambaftador on the tit of lait month has fenfibly affected them and that they find themfelves obliged to b.ar the complaints and reproaches contained therein as if their high mi^h.ineffes were fulpectcrl of wiihing to amufe your majefty by friendly af furances to which fads give the lie the are likewife affected by the menacing tone which reigns throu?ho a the memorial and which appears to cheir high mightinelfcs too little confo aant with what is received and outfit to have place between fovereigns and independent power and more efpecially be tween neighbours who have been fo long united by the ties of harmony and triendihip their high mightincfles think that on all occafions and particularly in theie unhappy troubles of your majefty's ameri can colonies they have done towards your iviaje-ly all that could be expected of a good neighbour and a friendly affection ate power as tr-.eir high mightneflesy sire fet the greateft value hpon your majefty's frienoihip they w,ili to do every thin in their power as far as is conii'tent with the dignity d honour ofthe ftate to cultivate it more and more but at the fame time they cannot conceal f;om your majefty the painful feniations which this memori-il has caufed them it is entirely from the motive of hewing vour majefty every poflrble attention j and to prove that their high mightineffes wi.'i to neglect nothing that may conduce to the inveiliga'ion of the trurh cf facts upon which ths complaints feem to be found ed that they have refolved to make this examination in the moft expeditious manner and to clear ir from all tedioufnefs and delay for this purpofe their high mightineffes have fet afide the ordinary form always ufed in fimilar cafes ofafkin for a written ftate of the cafe from their officers aijd perfons employed by them and their colonic j and they have already defps-tched their orders that rhj commandant o st euftatia ap pear before them without delay and as fpcediy as pofiible to give the neceffary informations of all that lias pafted in the illand of st eultatia and of what is come to their knowledge relative to the american colonies and their veffels during his command ; that they have recalled their goverr.yr ; that the infult is difavowcd and that orders are defparched to the governors and commandants in the colonies of their hi^h mightineffes in the weft indies to obferve ftristly the ia-rar and orders againft the exportation of military ftores to his mai jelly's american colonies now in rebellion and being perluad ed that their high mightineffes will attend to the ftrict execu tion of their ordinances rakes pleafure in putting an end to all fubjetts of regret which t.1e confequencrt of the offer-five con duit o/the governor of st eaftatia may have caufed them i have the honour to be with the moft perfect cut fid ration sir c suffolk warsa w april 23 some letters from he fron'urs of i urky mention that al though it was nop d that the differences between the porte and ruffia would have bten amicably fettled yet by the prepa rations it appeared as if they fh uld not lofig er.j y peace a quadruple alliance is much talked of by virtue of wh ch the king of sweden is fo cede swedifh p rherania ro the ki ig of pruiha who in return is to cede that part of finland which he poffeffes to sweden l o n d o n may 15 it is expe&ed that the f.mpercr of germany will arrive here before the 4th of next month and we hear will be attended by the counts.de provence and d'artoi incog letters from spain announce great changes in the political fyftem the allure as a certain facl that his catholic ma jefty is going to marry the princef3 maria frances antometta infanta of portugal his niece aged 4 years the 7th of octo ber next ; that the courts-of madrid and lifbon being reconcil ed the latter is to enter into the grand alliance that i to be concluded between france the houfe of auftria and spain and that it is in co formity to this pr jeft that the court of spain has defpatched feveral packet boats to don cevallos with repeated orders to lufpend all hoftili'ies againft portugal and its pofieflions in america but that however preparation for v/ar are continued with the fame activity all over the paniih dominions it is reported ss an indlfputable faft that portugal has en tered into the family compact and in confequence thereof hat made her peace with spain sir'george howard's regiment of dragoons which were re viewed by his majefty on monday laft upon blackhca*»h are marched into kent and ordered to be in readinefs to embark for america at a coitt of common council held yefterday at guildhall at which were ptefent the lord mayor aldermen bull sawbridge lewes plomer newnham lee and woolridge the follow ing refolutions were entered into viz refolved that the fpecch m?.de bv the right honourable sir fletcher norton speaker of the houfe of commons oa the 7th inft be entered in the journals of this court that the freedom of this city be prefented to the right hon sir fletcher norton speaker of the right hon houfitof com mon for having declared in manly terms the real ftate of the natio to his majefty on the throne when he prefented to him for his royal alient the bill intituled an aft for the bet ter juppcrt of his majefty's boufehou arid of the kone-ur and dignity of the cronon of great britain september 12 1777
