wilmington november 20 0|i^g^^w n saturday the 19th of aft month about seven of the clock iii tnc evening near five hundred people aflfembled together in this m3&f*^ffi town and exhibited the effigy ofa certain honourable gen tleman ; and after letting it hang by the neck for fome time near tne court-houfe they made a large bonfire with a number f^^^^^k f iar barrels c and committed it to the flames.—the reafon • mki^o affigned for the people's diflike to that gentleman was from being informed of his having feveral times expre/ted himfelf much in favour of the stamp-duty after the fffigy was confumed they went to every houfe in town and bro't all the gentlemen to the bonfire jand infilled upon their drinking liberty property and no stamp-duty and confufion to lord b j 1 and al his adherents giving three huzzas at the conclufion of each toall they continued together until 12 of the clock and then difperfed without doing any mifchief and on thurfday 3ill of the fame month in the evening a great number of people again afiembled and produced an effigy of liberty which they put into a coffin and marched in folemn proceffion with it to the church-yard a drum in mourning bearing before them nnd the town belt muffled ringing a dole till knell at the fame time but before they committed the body to the ground they thought it advifeable to feel its pulfe ; and when finding fome re mains oi life they returned back to a bonfire ready prepared placed the effigy before it in a large two-arm'd chair antl concluded the evening with great re joicings on finding that liberty had ftiil an exigence in the colonies.—not the leal injury was offered to anv perfon on saturday the 16th of this inft william houston efq diftributor of sta mi's tor this province came to this town i upon which three or four hun dred peo le immediately gathered together with drums beating and colours flying 1 i paired to the houfe the faid stamp-officer put up at and infilled upon knowing kl whether he intended to execute his laid office or not he told t m " h fhould be very forry to execute any oti.c difagreeable to the people of th l'.o'v in e but they not content with fuch a declaration carried him into the court-1 loufe where he figned a refignation fatisfa&ory to the whole as too as the stamp-officer had comply'd with their defire they placed him an arm-chair carried him firfl round the court-houfe giving three huzzas it every corner and then proceeded with him round one ot the squares of the town and la him down at the door of his lodgings formed themfelves in a it <* ir le round him and gave him three cheers they then efcorted him into the h uie whet was prepared the befl liquors to be had ami treated him very il in the evening a large bonfire was made and no perfon appeared in i ie strei ts without having liberty in large capital letters in his hat they had 1 large table near the bonfire well ruinifivd with feveral sorts of liquoi , where they drank in great form all the favourite american toads giving l leers'at the conclufion ot each the whole was conducted with i reat d corui 1 and not the leaft intuit offered to any perfon r c immediately j brmtft the title age % tbat peaks tbe nature ofa tragic volume this is the place to affix the stamp continuation of the november 20 numb 58 north-carolina gazette
