bc from it's fallitii banks umber embeded in the mud of iu channel its sand-bars and itaadv rapidity f n current all which mb y i,e overcome with a fci-eai degree of certainty byutintrtjie necessary prer.i.utions the passage l,v li.r.d ol3«o miteafintm the fall of the missouri to the kooskooske is the mo»t for.miu.d.le part of the tract proposed across the continent of this distance 200 milei is abn ff a k oou road and 140 miles over tremendous moun tains which for 60 miles are covered with c ternal snows a pansacs over these moun tains is however piscticallc from the latter part of june to th last of september • und the cheap rate at which horses are to be ob tamed from the indian of the rocky moun tains and west of them reduces the expen ces of transportation over this portage to a mere trifle the navigation of the koos kooske lewis's river and the columbia is ii nd «° od ' f : r '"» the first of april to the middle of august by making three portaees on the utter river the fi rst of which in descending is 1200 paces at the falls of the columbia 36 1 miles up that river the second of two miles at the ion narrows 6 mile be low the falls and a third also of two miles at the great rapids 6 miles still lower down the tide flows up the cohunbia 183 mi!es sc within seven miles of die great rapids — large sloop may with safety ascend « hi k h as tide water and veste of 300 tons burthen reach the entrance of tha multnomah river • large southern branch of the columbia which takes its rise on the confines of new mexico with thecallerado and apostle 1 * ri i discharging itself into the columbia 135 miles from its entrance into the pacific ocean i consider this tract across the con tinent of immense advantage to the fur trade as all the furs collected in nine tenths or the most valuable fur country in ameri ca may be conveyed to the mouth of the columbw and shipped from thence to the east-indies by the brst of august in each year ;
