this cri minal filence will b viewed by an im pirtial world in a light greatly to yc u * difadvantage certainly gentlemen you mult have very weighty reafbhs which induced you todeclare youi fckes wifer than the majorities of ten dates therefore as a member of the go vernment and one of your conftitu ents i now in this public manner call for thofe rcafons or the principles upon which you mean tojuftify your rejection the gentlemen of the mi nority are pleafcd to fay you are not able to give tho c reafons in the man ner above fpecified and that there ib not one in your number equal to the tafk if you are not gentlemen in god's great name ! upon what prin ciples do you mean to acquit ycurlelves to your countrymen for the lacred trufts committed to your care which appears to have been bafely betrayed ? step forth then into public notice and exculpate yourfclvcs before it be too late the mangled rights of your country call upon your exertions in this way either juftify yourfelves to an impartial world or in iackcloth and afhes confefs your ignorance in the fight of god and in the face of your injured country * ye few whofe influence have led the greater number into this labyrinth of iniquity go forth in time like the for the c e nt i n e l . concluded from our hft to the members who compofed the majority in the late convention gentlemen % i come how to the laft point which was to make a few general reflections as they might occaiionally aiiieout of the foregoing considera tions your proceedings gentlemen in the convention vi ill direttly tend to ex hibit the ftate of north-carolina a fpeftaclc of ridicule and contempt to a fneering urmerie as the refult of your united councils and the understand ing of your conltituents will he mea lured by their completion if it has hot this tffwftj to our infigniscance alone we will bt indebted for the ex emption it will alfo have a tendency to awaken tint vindictive fpii it the guardian of national honor which c llec~ted f om ten sovereign independent ftates muft be extremely chaftc and delicate in deed ; confequently their dccifions withrefpect to us may be equally fe vereand inefiftiblein their operations you have given a mortal ftab to the already wounded faith of north-ca rolina by vainly attempting to pre vent the adoption of a fyftem of laws calculated for the fupport of public faith and national integrify and by the complcftion of fome of your pro pofed amendments corroborated by a number of legiflative acts you have very clearly exhibited a melancholy ex ample of the depravity of human na ture when enveloped with ignorance regulated by low and felfifh purfuits which when once infinuated into the national councils never ends but in the contamination of the whole body politic you have ftamped an infa mous ftigma upon the national honor of north-carolina which a century of virtuous exertions may not be fuf ficien to efface you have accumu lated the debts of the ftate while at the fame time you have done every thing in your power to put it beyond her reach to anfwer the juft demands which now lie againft her . celeftial mefiengcr of vengeance rood prepared to deftroy his royal refidence and lay is it not here name every man himfeif that has betrayed the trufts committed to my charge — but as for thefe sheep what have they done ?
