f 1 1 1 l i • 7 1 salisbury c febeuaeyj5 1883 l fv,-~third 3ehie8 no:c woman's power the game of draw the mothers solicitude the wife's pa tience and anxiety the sister's love have proved in nine cases out of ten the strong cord that pulled at the heart of the wan derer till son or husband or brother could no longer bear the strain and loos ened it by coming nearer and nearer home some woman's hand holds the key unconsciously and carelessly per haps but holds it to almost every man's heart and the closed doors will be un barred to her and yield to her touch when no other power will stir them on their rusty hinges let any woman who finds herself thus inside beware how she works in clearing out the darkened chambers so that god's light can enter let her work with such skillful touches f prayer and tenderness as shall do some thing better than stir like an unskillful servant all of the dust only to see it set tle thicker in another place it is no light work this leading of human souls and any woman who undertakes at needs to bring to it all there is of her she will need all her knowledge of iod and perhaps never discover how little she possesses till she tries to open it for an other soul to measure her treasure sho will need her knowledge of people her discrimination f cliamctei her intuitive discernments of mental conditions and her sympathetic perception of feeling all the brightest and best that sho can command is not too good nor too fair to be used in the saving of what is best aud fairest ia others investigation has developed that the fascinating game of draw was invented somewhere about 1846 by a mr kirk man of tennessee a turfman of some note the game of straight or plain poker of course dates further back draw may now be said to be the national game and is perhaps doing more harm in a quiet and unnoticed way than dealing in any other species of gambling almost ev erybody knows a little something about the game which appears simple enough arid yet it has been gravely considered and adjudged thai the very height of hu man wisdom is to know when to lay a hand down some years since a draw poker sharp who ostensibly traveled for a baltimore liquor and cigar house aud who claimed the startling and showy sobriquet of speckled yellowhanimer from north carolina " exhibited to us and a couple of new york commercial tourists how four jacks could be drawn from a pack and held up a sleeve for use during a succession of games we con tributed liberally for the information aud since then we have not been drawing much to uninitiated it may be said that they will not lose anything if they neglect to draw in this way there are some rules about it entirely safe never play for money if you cannot convenient ly afford to lose it don't play without you understand the game the men are all dead who understand the game — ma con telegraph the wilmington review says that a man named haywood from wash ington city 1ms been runiaging around tlie defunct ballot boxes at wadcsboro seeing if anything could be gotten that would be of service in dockery'a contest for bennett's seat and the charlotte journal remarks that mr h j i lay wood nf phila delphia who registered himself at the hotel as being from richmond has been in that burg for several days and that he is in the employment oi the government his business being to make inquiries and secure evidence in regard to election frauds in this state we have no objection to mr dock cry's employing as many lawyers or agents as he may choose to get np facts for his case but we do object to the united states government em ploying a philadelphia lawyer or any one else to get up dockery's case for him and we protest that no public money ought to be paid out in this way for dockery's benefit if it be unfairly stated and the man is not connected with dockery's case then we protest against the united states government sending a paid agent down here to do wlr.it the uni ted district attorneys ought to do we cannot impute to the district at torneys such a reflection upon their own competency as that this fellow haywood was sent here at their in stance if the district attorneys are incom petents let them give plase to better men ; but pray do not give the world the spectacle of having a philadel phia understrapper nosing around to do what the united states officials charged with the execution of the law are unable to do in no aspect does it appear proper f<>r the administra tion to be sending out paid men to look into north carolina elections it is only another subtnrfuge in order to make work and rob the treasury — news observer that must have been a very amus ing debate in the massachusetts leg islature last monday on the resolu tion to print 10,000 extra copies of old ben butler's inaugural address a boston democrat introduced the resolution and it completely demora lized the radical brethren a motion was made by a radical to reduce the number to 2,000 and the ball then opened the democrats insis ted that the people had not been sufficiently informed of its contents — that it was a remarkable indict ment against the radicals and that every radical ought to have the priv ilege of reading the accusation against him the radicals opposed the reso lution some giving as a reason that it was a job put up s that if the leg islature passed the resolution butler could veto it and claim credit for economy ! and others saying that it would be endorsing butler's slanders of the state the resolution passed — char journal a narrow escape — to be beard ed even by the puny hands of a man places one in a delicate position but to be rubbed around the chin by cold , iron rods pulling and wrapping up whiskers with a 50-horse motive pow er must be quite alto-ether embar rassing in the extreme well mr ; know the truth and gambetta died yet made uo sign 1 can vouch for the au thenticity of this version of the unhappy story and i assume the on ire responsi bility for it no matter how different it may l>e from the others which may ob tain publicity the federal house has passed an im portant bill one of whose selection reads as follows that the circuit courts of i lie united states shall not take original cognizance of any suit f a civil nature either at common law or inequity between a corpora tion created or organised by or under the loss if any state and a citizen of any state in which such corporation at tlie time the cause of action accrued may have been canying on any business authorized by the law creating it except in cases arising under the patent or copyright laws and in like which sometimes flatter themselves with the belief that they affect legislation will have to abandon that conceit every paper in the state lias been urging the pas sage of a dog law but the legisla printing office iu this city there is a com positor who is deaf and dumb in the same printing office there arc two other compositors who arc endowed with the power of evolving tremendous sneezes when tho spirit tickles tho nose one of them is a little short chubby fellow with around red face the grandeur of his sneeze is so utterly disproportionate to the diminutive size of his body that his fellow printers refer to it as a wrong font sneeze neither of the two compos itors who sneeze work iu the same alley with the compositor who is deaf and dumb and the cases between them are so arranged genteel pauperism the republi can leaders now argue that our domestic manufacturers cannot live and that even certain growers of sugar lemons oranges and peanuts in the south cannot live un less poor rates are doled out to them out of the earnings and savings of every man woman aud child in the land as mr belmout so clearly put the case in his speeches dining tho canvas what would be the difference in principle between legislation to compel this and legislation authorizing the federal government to pay these poor rates in cash out of the treasury to those sturdy beggars sarkasm may be wh sfur tin bill offerred by mr cox of north carolina two or three days ago in regard to contested elections in the house of rep resentatives provides that in cases of con tested elections the contestants shall be paid nothing unless the house shall declare that there were reasonable giounds for the chir.es and that the pay shall be such then as only to cover the necessary expense and not
