Canova
was
chosen
to
make
the
statue
which
was
brought
to
Raleigh
in
1821
.
When
the
old
State
House
burned
in
1831
, the
building's
dome
fell
in on the
statue
and
destroyed
it
. In the
early
twentieth
century
,
Canova's
working
model
for the
Washington
statue
was
discovered
in
Italy
. In
May
1970
, the
state
received
a
marble
copy
of this
model
which
is
on
display
in the
state
Capital
rotunda
.
