TWO- TIME VICTORS AND AS YET UNSCORED
UPON, THE STAR-SPANGLED GREMLINS face
their toughest grid test of the young
season Saturday afternoon (Oct, 7),
when they tangle with the highly-touted,
unbeaten Third Infantry Cockades of Fort
Benning at Columbia, S,
С»
While the Gremlins were polishing off
the First Air Force's Chatham Field
eleven, 45-0, last Sunday at Savannah,
the Cockades were submerging Maxwell Fielc
26-0, a pretty good .indication that
coming events will be no tea party,
Benning will field a long list of
former All-Americans .and All-Star players,
sparked by Billy Hillenbrand, Al'l-American
triple threat halfback from the
University Of Indiana, Hillenbrand was
leading ground gainer in the Big Ten in
1942.
Two other Indiana backs are also with
the Cockades — Lou Saban, one of the
nation's outstanding quarterbacks, and
Chuck Jacoby, fleet halfback, both of whom
were members of the Chicago All-Star
team this year.
In addition the Benning backfield
galaxy includes such names as John Bortka,
Kansas State; Bill Reinhard, triple •
threat from the University of California,
Mel Stevens, Temple University; Bob Epps,
Little All-American and one of the
leading ground-gainers in the. country
two seasons ago,
Benning rs starting line will average
200 pounds. Jack Wegman, 220 pounder,
is slated to s^tart at center but will have
plenty of help from Forrest Bachman,
Nebraska, and Bob Weber, Iowa,
Starting guards will be John Donohue,
of George Washington, and Frank Wilkens,
Nebraska, who will be supported by
Santino Di Antonio, Rutgers,' and Virgil
Tank, 210 pounder, Fred Huff, Indiana,
and Bill Utz, Western Reserve- will be the
tackle while Harry Taylor, Kentucky, and
Joe Dowd, Mercer, handle the ends.
The game last week was marked by
the return of Bonclli who has been out
with an injured leg. Bonelli scored
the first touchdown for the Gremd against
Chatham Field when.hd swung around the
left side of the lino for a .14 yard dash
midway in the first- quarter,
Trippi, however,' paced the Gremlins
for the short time he saw action, scoring
two touchdowns in 'the first period.
Thereafter, a flood of reserves handled
the Third Air Force fortunes 'against
Chatham's First Air Force 'rs.
The Gremlins, scoring in every period
did not leave the issue long in doubt,
Trippi started the first touchdown march
by returning a punt 15 yards to Chatham's
47, Bonelli picked up seven and Triopi
added five for a first down, Trippi
passed to Gnup on the 15, Kennedy gained
a yard and Bonelli went over for the
score.
Eddins set up the second tally a few
minutes later when he recovered a fumble
on Chatham's 20, On the next play Trippi
went over for the score. The third
touchdown of .the first period came after
Trippi intercepted a pass and carried it
to Chatham's 39. Bonelli gained ;nine and
then Trippi, with the help of hard .
blocking, scampered ever the goal line.
